Mardi Himal Trek

The untouched ridge trail in the Annapurna range

The Mardi Himal trek is the Annapurna region's best-kept secret. A ridge trail that climbs through forest, cloud, and alpine meadow to the base of Mardi Himal (5,587m), with jaw-dropping close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. Unlike the busy Poon Hill and ABC trails, Mardi Himal sees far fewer trekkers, making it feel like a private Himalayan experience. The trail was only opened to trekkers in 2012.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A detailed look at each day of your Mardi Himal Trek adventure. Every itinerary is crafted to balance trekking, acclimatization, and cultural experiences.

Day 1

Day 1: Pokhara to Kande — Trek to Forest Camp (2,520m)

Drive to Kande (1 hour) and begin the trek up through oak and rhododendron forest. The trail follows a ridge between the Modi Khola and Mardi Khola valleys. Arrive at Forest Camp (also called Kokar). Walking time: 4-5 hours.

Day 2

Day 2: Forest Camp to Low Camp (2,990m)

Continue through dense rhododendron forest — magical in spring when the trees bloom. Break through the tree line into alpine meadow. Arrive at Low Camp with views of Machhapuchhre starting to open up. Walking time: 3-4 hours.

Day 3

Day 3: Low Camp to High Camp (3,580m)

The ridge becomes exposed and dramatic. Walk through alpine grassland with panoramic views on both sides. Arrive at High Camp — a handful of basic tea shelters perched on a narrow ridge. Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South fill the sky. Walking time: 4-5 hours.

Day 4

Day 4: High Camp to Upper Viewpoint (4,500m) — Descend to Low Camp (2,990m)

Pre-dawn start for the upper viewpoint near the base of Mardi Himal. The sunrise over Machhapuchhre from 4,500m is staggering — the Fishtail peak is so close it feels touchable. Return to High Camp for breakfast, then descend to Low Camp. Walking time: 7-8 hours.

Day 5

Day 5: Low Camp to Siding — Drive to Pokhara

Descend via the alternative route through Siding village to avoid retracing your steps. Drive back to Pokhara. Afternoon free. Walking time: 4-5 hours.

Mardi Himal Trek — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mardi Himal harder than Poon Hill?
Yes, moderately harder. Mardi Himal goes 1,300m higher (4,500m vs 3,210m), the ridge trail is steeper and more exposed, and accommodation at High Camp is more basic. But it is still a 5-day trek and does not require previous experience — just better fitness. The payoff is dramatic close-up mountain views and far fewer trekkers.
